The Result is a Great Vewing Experience!
Ultra-D™ is the result of years of research and development in the field of 3D optical delivery. Ultra-D™ is a proprietary combination of hardware, middleware and software in perfect sync. It introduces a proprietary optical stack matched to the sub pixel level of the panel and adhered to the panel during the bonding process. The result is a state of the art display that allows the unassisted human eye to view live and recorded content in true 3D. No Glasses Required! The optical technology directs light from the sub-pixel level at an optimal angle to create a 3D image for the human eye
It’s like opening a window to a world that is just beyond reach. Behind the scenes, there is a vigorous play by a matrix of sophisticated software algorithms that scan incoming feeds to decipher the different layers that may be used to extrude and generate depth. Once identified, they are given depth that may be either user-defined or computer-generated and packaged into the Ultra-D™ format. All this happens in microseconds, keeping the video latency to levels that cannot be discerned by the human eye. This is what auto stereoscopic 3D or glasses free 3D should be.
The Workings
There are two parts to the Ultra-D™ process:Display
The Ultra-D™ Display integrates proprietary hardware, middleware and software. An underlying LCD, LED or OLED panel is combined with specially-designed optical layers that use refractive and diffractive technologies to create a 140-degree continuous light front. The resulting 3D Optical system is integrated with the middleware that instructs the display how to operate at a sub-pixel level. Software that decodes Ultra-D™ formatted content is the final element that completes the 3D Module.Content Conversion

Ultra-D™ 2160p
160p (Ultra High Definition) panels consist of 4K x 2K active pixels or precisely 38402160 pixels in a panel with a 16:9 aspect ratio. This translates into 8.3 million pixels that project an image as opposed to a 1080p (HD) panel with 1920 x 1080 pixels or 2 million pixels. This groundbreaking technology provides a true auto-stereoscopic (3D without glasses) viewing experience in 2160p resolution when viewing stereoscopic (3D with glasses) or two-dimensional HD 1080p resolution content. A proprietary software algorithm in the Ultra-D SoC 4K conversion hardware takes the original 1080p input signal and creates new pixel information from the depth domain, unlike the simple pixel multiplication and stretching done by scalers that other companies use.
This new pixel data is then processed as a 2160p auto-stereoscopic signal by a proprietary rendering chip, which results in an ultra high definition glasses-free 3D view on the Ultra-D™ 2160p powered display. The conversion hardware is significant for two reasons: (1) it can convert both 2D and 3D with glasses content into 2160p glasses-free 3D in real time and (2) the viewing experience is fully user adjustable. - The Optical System
The Ultra-D optical system is a stack of layers of refractive and diffractive optical elements bonded to a liquid-crystal display. Optical system – 3D hardware including firmware allows:
- Glasses-free experience
- High quality 3D
- Full contrast and brightness
- True color reproduction
The technology can be applied in flat panel products ranging from displays as small as 4 inches to the largest mass-produced displays of 84 inches. Consequently, the Ultra-D technology can be integrated on smart phones, tablets, PC’s, picture frames etc.
How does it work?
The light of individual sub-pixels is directed from the screen and projected into space; it generates virtual pixels. Virtual pixels merge in the space and form a complete view for each eye of the viewer (see picture below). From that point the viewer’s brain takes over processing both views in the same natural way, as it is used to in the real world, creating a natural 3D experience.With the Ultra-D technology the viewing areas are repeated in a horizontal way and the transitions between these areas are made smooth. So, a viewing area is not divided in discrete views as is done in most other technologies, but the optical system creates an almost continuous light field in front of the screen.
Immersive Viewing Experience
The technology does not use special equipment as sensors for eye or head tracking. This means there is no limitation to the number of viewers and there is no fixed viewing position with respect to the screen. It allows the viewer to move freely in the range of recommended viewing angle of approximately 120 degrees and feel as if looking through a window to the world.Viewing Distance
The view configuration of the newest Ultra-D displays is such, that it allows the viewer to experience 3D from distances other than the optimal viewing distance. Moreover, even from a distance twice the optimal one the viewer still experiences 3D.The future development of the technology will allow the viewer to choose an optimal distance by adjusting settings with a remote control. However in the current implementation it has a fixed default factory setting, which depends on the application of the screen.
For comfortable viewing of a glasses-free 3D display, it is important to have a convenient viewing distance. The optimal viewing distance of the Ultra-D screens is rather flexible. It is directly related to a design choice and depends on the purpose of the display. Obviously for digital signage applications the 3D effect is expected to be visible from a distance of about 10m and closer. For the consumer market the recommended optimal distance is 3 m, where the size of an average living room is taken into account.Depth/ Pop
The depth of the screen and pop out of the Ultra-D display can be adjusted by the viewer by using the remote control while playing video.Other aspects
Commonly discussed challenges of 3D without glasses displays are: brightness of a screen, color reproduction and field/frame rate.
However, these factors are not affected by the Ultra-D optical system. They are dependent on the quality of the liquid-crystal panel used.

The Ultra-D Format
Includes a separate depth signal next to the regular video signal extended with meta-data.Therefore, it is an “image+depth-based” 3D format. Main characteristics:- The format is built upon widely available video coding and distribution standards. Therefore, the format leverages standard content distribution infrastructure, both at the broadcaster and at the receiver end. Hence, investments in existing infrastructure are retained.
- The format is independent of particular 3D optics and other display properties. In other words: the format is display-agnostic, which decouples the content from display characteristics and hardware generation. Therefore, the format is suitable for content creation, distribution and conversion at the end-user.
- The format requires very limited additional bandwidth compared to regular 2D signals. Therefore, the Ultra-D format is suitable as a distribution format against minimal additional cost.
- The format enables adjusting of depth range by the end-user, so it is adaptable to personal preferences.
- The format can be generated from many difference sources, so it facilitates use of legacy 2D video formats, “3D” stereoscopic formats, etc.

- Signal Processing
Sources of Ultra-D Content
Rendering the Ultra-D format involves generation of multiple signals that are sent to the sub-pixels of the display panel. The signals are carefully tuned to the display optics, resulting in an optimal perceived 3D depth. Due to the properties of the 3D optics being used in this rendering process, this processing is display-specific (contrary to the Ultra-D format itself, which is display-agnostic).
A viewer observes a scene with his two eyes from a slightly different direction. So, apart from differences in viewing angle, the two views also show small covering (or occlusion) and uncovering differences. The rendering functionality is equipped to handle this properly.
Adjustment of the depth range to adapt the 3D perception to the personal preferences of the end-user is handled by this rendering process. This adjustment covers both the amount of “depth” as well as the amount of “pop”. At this stage, both the preferred depth range and the properties of the 3D optics are known. Both inputs are taken into account.
Applications like games already have a 3D scene model internally. From the 3D scene, the depth information can be extracted in real-time and used in the Ultra-D format.
For off-line CGI content creation, plugins for tools like Autodesk® 3ds Max® facilitate the Ultra-D format. In addition, depth-based compositing offers fine control in authoring Ultra-D productions.
Over the last years, stereoscopic 3D content has become widely available to end-users. By providing real-time conversion into the Ultra-D format, this content is immediately made available for auto-stereoscopic viewing. Our solution supports all common stereoscopic 3D formats presently used in the market.
Conversion technology can also be applied off-line for use in a content creation process (typically in a studio). Off-line processing allows for more number-crunching and enables the use of more advanced algorithms. E.g. a whole scene can be analyzed in advance, before the actual conversion. Furthermore, off-line processing allows manual intervention in the conversion process, and offers more options for artistic control.
Also regular 2D video content can be enhanced into the Ultra-D format. Proprietary methods recognize depth cues in the 2D footage and convert that information in real time into the Ultra-D format. By providing real-time conversion into the Ultra-D format, also 2D content is immediately made available for auto-stereoscopic viewing.
In an off-line setting, a conversion artist can annotate the 2D footage on some key frames with depth information. Advanced tooling generates the Ultra-D content.
For compatibility, existing 2D video, stereoscopic 3D video, and computer generated sources, can be converted to the Ultra-D format, both in real-time and off-line.
